Titel: Morning Matters No. 7
Year: 2020
Artist: Kirsten Heuschen
Technique: cyanotype on hand-coated paper, photogram, unique copy
Size: 21 x 14,8 cm
The series "Morning Matters" stems from a meditative engagement with nature and an intense connection with the earth. By collecting plant roots that were pulled from the ground during weeding, photograms were created and captured on paper using the cyanotype technique. These roots, as diverse as they are in form and structure, represent life beneath the surface, the invisible connection of plants to the soil.
The roots appear in the images partly as clear, precise lines, representing the path of growth and anchoring. Other roots, however, form chaotic, tangled patterns, reflecting the wild, often untamed character of nature. The use of cyanotype with its characteristic blue-and-white tones gives the images a mystical atmosphere that evokes the sky, stars, and lightning—representing the invisible yet omnipresent forces of nature.
As in the other series of the artist where light and matter merge, here too the duality of order and chaos becomes visible. The photograms are snapshots of the living process hidden within the roots, while also an attempt to make the invisible visible. Just as light plays with objects on the paper in the cyanotype process, the calm of meditative gardening merges with the dynamism of nature and the deep, almost spiritual experience of these roots.
